The Neriah Community Development Corporation is working to make a positive difference in the lives of those affected by cancer, raise funds for breast cancer research, and to save lives by increasing awareness and early detection through our events and programs. Our program engages in year-round activities designed to educate the public about good health practices, including preventative health care and the importance of annual cancer screenings. Educational tools include community presentations, health fairs, newsletters, television and radio public service announcements, special recognition events, and literature distribution.

High Hopes

After School Program

Provides evening tutoring and after-school homework assistance to students (K-7) in all subjects including math, science, and English with the goal of improving academic performance and standardized test scores, and enhancing student learning and assist student in meeting the state's academic achievement standards. This program provides assistance to over 100 students each year: students such as Grant Richardson and his mother Celeste. Celeste was a single parent working two jobs to make ends meet. Grant was her nine year-old son. At the time Grant that started attending the after-school program he had been put out of school for fighting every day and was attending an alternative school. Even though his mother could not afford the after-school fees the program director worked with her and staff became involved with Grant; not only providing educational assistance but also doing follow up visits at his school. Grant began doing so well that he soon returned to public school and made the honor roll. It is NERIAH’S goal to help develop learners who value education and view it as an opportunity to reach their full potential.

Ida A. Bull Tutorial/Educational

Empowerment Program

The Ida A. Bull Academy is a weekend academy designed to help young people—first grade through the twelfth grade—achieve their educational goals, become superlative citizens and socially aware human beings who make a positive contribution to society. The academy works closely with area schools to address the growing concern over the number of students who are being expelled from school and those who graduate with certificates instead of diplomas. The Academy is designed to not only be a great learning environment, but also encourage positive personal development and give children and youth positive things to do while keeping them off the streets.  We encourage critical thinking, practical application, and appreciation for the arts through:

 · Test taking skills

 · Cultural events

 · Related arts

This well-balanced, in-depth approach to education ensures every student gains the tools necessary to be a success in our fast-paced and ever changing world. The goal of the Academy is to develop life winners. Students attend the Academy for free. Area educators have partnered with the academy and donate their time. We want to turn our children into champions.

Help Us Change Lives

You can help us have a positive and direct impact on the life of a young person, or a person in need who otherwise could fall prey or become a victim of drugs, gangs, street violence, pregnancy, hunger and the like… We have received the Ammie E. Murray Community Service Award “for working with the Juvenile Arbitration Program by providing a community service site where youngsters can learn responsibility, accountability and respect in helping others.” We are in ongoing partnership with the Department of Juvenile Justice. Twice weekly family development classes are held for troubled youth and parents.

Our programs operate year round, but we are in urgent need of your immediate assistance. “We can only make a difference in the lives of people in need, with your help!

Back to School Bash

At the Annual Back to School Bash students receive free school supplies, free food and enjoy a fun filled day. We envision every student having the best learning opportunities possible, beginning with the tools they need to succeed in the classroom. This vision can be hampered for many families by their already stretched budgets. The Back to School Bash provides students in the community with the supplies they need to succeed during the school year.

Our goal is to give away school supplies to over five hundred K-12 students in the Lexington and Richland County area. We hope to serve every student who attends, but we depend on financial support from businesses and community organizations.
